What for heavens sake are "sneakers"?

I saw this word in a discussion about footwear, what the hell is a "sneaker", is it the same as a "brothel creeper", or is it one of those words from our colonial friends (apologies if that is not PC but I don't care that much)

What for heavens sake are "sneakers"?
Sneakers are shoes, i believe its what the Americans call trainers.

I expect they get their name from soft soles so you can hear peuople apporaching as if they were wearing high heels or hard soled shoes... cant hear... ie sneaking... therefore they are called 'sneakers'

Reply:Are you referring to the US as Britain's colonial friend? Anyways, I have no idea what a brothel creeper is, we don't actually use the word brothel too much in the US, and a sneaker is a casual gym shoe, something you can run, walk, play, or go to the mall in. Most people have several pairs.
Reply:In my day, gym shoes were called rubbers (smirk).
Reply:tennis shoes used to be called sneakers

tennis shoes are rubbersoled shoes with a material or canvas top
Reply:gym shoes fool! Duh
Reply:They are the same as trainers. Some are made entirely out of material and very soft rather than leather. The word is american for the english trainer.
Reply:trainers
Reply:Sneakers are for sneaking. It's an American term for Training Shoes.

More power to you r.e "Colonial Friends" - thought I was the only one for a while!
Reply:Sneakers is just another name for gym shoes, depending on where your live.
Reply:Its a tennis shoe,or kick,or treads,or shoes.
Reply:"sneakers" is just another term for the kind of footwear kids wore back in the days before running shoes. Sometimes called tennis shoes, or basketball shoes.

It means rubber soled, canvas sided, soft shoes with laces. usually they were black canvas with white rubber inthe 1950s and 60s but later if you were really cool they came in white, red or blue. They were 'hi top" or "low top" depending on whether they extended up past the ankle or ended under the ankle. I remember that some years hi tops were cool and some years everyone wore lo tops. This is practically ancient history, you know.
