New Pergola?

I have a lovley new Pergola in my back garden ..which is quite big..about 12ft x 6 1/2 ft any advice what type of creepers I should grow over it... maybe a few different creepers that would bloom one after the other...is that possible..what would you advise... many thanks

New Pergola?
A honeysuckle,a climbing rose such as Handel,a Passion flower,a climbing hydrangea, wisteria, possibly a grape vine if in a sheltered part of the country.

Any or all would give a selection of colour and perfume.

For temporary cover, pots of aubretia, climbing nasturtiums, trailing sweet peas etc; could be suspended from the pergola.
Reply:We have a pergola and have loads creepers growing over it, the first to flower is the Clematis Montana which has gone right across it and right up the Hawthorn tree near it as well,so that one is pretty rampant but if you want you can knock it back. Another Clemtis is 'Rouge Cardinal' which flowers in Summer and I cut that one back to about 6 inches from the bottom every spring. We also have a very fragrant honeysuckle which we can control when we want to. and I have just planted a Passion Flower ( can't wait to see what that does ) so you see you can go mad when you have a pergola, good luck, I'm sure it will look lovely.
Reply:A clematis is often a good idea. There are many different varieties which flower at different times between spring and summer.

We had a large pergola at our last house which also had a grape vine. They look great when they grow over the top and produce loads of fruit. Needs to be in a very sunny, but sheltered location.
Reply:This is what I have and it is a FAST GROWER.

As you can see it's a prolific grower and it comes in several colors as well as shades of color.

Reply:Try a Moon Vine. It has a tremendous white blossom which blooms at night only. It is very fragrant, and attract hummingbirds and luna moths in the evening. Very easy to grow. I've enjoyed mine tremendously, each and every year. (They are re-seeders)
