HORROR MOVIES: GOTTEN BETTER or WORSE?

Many people complain that horror movies today SUCK! "Their not scray and their just all about gore." Now I'm 21, and feel that my generation is the unstaisfied-generation. With all the computer effects and hype and all that. Are expectations seem so high. And were also a very desentized generation as well, when it comes to blood-shed and violence. I don't think its possibel to find anything that scares us on the screen anymore. We've seen it all! Now granted there has been a lot of good films to come out over the years: SLITHER, THE DESCENT, GINGER SNAPS, JEEPERS CREEPERS ect. But were we are also the generation that has missed out on the first's. FREDDY,JASON, MYERS, THE THING. We weren't around to appreciate those.

So do you think that horror films have gotten worse? Has the golden age of horror movies past?

HORROR MOVIES: GOTTEN BETTER or WORSE?
like everything, horror movies have evolved....some people might say that they like the newer generation horror movies, and every now and then we do get a really good movie. As a horrormaniac...a real big fan of the genre...i can say that theres just something that the new movies lack....i dont know if its the campiness or character development or even the crazy stories first told from the 60's to early 90's...it just feels that no one is trying to be creative anymore, no one is trying new ideas...everyone is just playing it safe in either remaking a classic or putting a spin on the tortue subgenre....but i think horror movies will soon move out of this slump because fans of the old school horror are finally coming to of age and directing their own stuff...so i think that this will definitely help in the next few years....another reason that horror movies lack creativity is becuz studies nowadays are only interested in turning a profit....they can shoot a horror movie for extremely cheap, even if it sucks, and turn a profit if the trailers good....sry for how long this was...ill get off the soap box...
Reply:I don't want to believe it has passed, but the focus now is on being the goriest. And gore isn't scary.

Horror movies today fall flat because they're missing the suspense. I rewatched the original "Halloween" movies this past weekend and they still scare the begeesus out of me. Michael Myers walking up behind you while you can't get the friggin' door open is scary!

Filmmakers need to get back to being suspenseful. Gore is boring.
Reply:I think it is ALL AWESOME- the old and the new, the "good" and the "bad." I just saw "Hot Fuzz" and it kicked butt! I have old Hitchcock movies and all the new gory zombie stuff. I am 35 so I saw a lot of those classics when they were released. Go and rent "Trick or Treat" if you haven't. As far as not being scared- whocares!! I haven't been scared by that stuff since I was small, but still it is SO entertaining, I just cannot get enough!!!
Reply:I agree with Billy. Far too many director's seem to think that the more gore the better. Stephen King once said, that he tries to allow the reader's mind to work its own magic of fright, and only when he can no longer do so will he consider using the gross out.

That's something current movies need to remember. Allow the audience to imagine the terror and they will do a good enough job of scaring themselves. Then, when and if you decide to go for the gross out..the audience is already sitting on the edge of their seats. BOO..works very well at that point. Quick, short images..not detailed slow motion dismemberment.
Reply:They are worse. They make them so bad and un=believable that they don't even entertain any more. A horror movie should make you scared, not laugh at it.
Reply:well i think hollywood is running out of fresh ideas. i recently saw disturbia and it scared the crap out of me. im 20 and i dont feel unsatisfied. if ever i need a really good scary movie i just watch one of the classics.
Reply:To me, they are worse. I still go on and rent classics like IT, The Shining and Hellraiser. Nowdays, people don't even know what a horror movie is anymore. And it's a pity that with all the technology we have today, movies cannot bring the suspense and the frightening feeling like many movies did in the past. It's true that kids today are not like before and don't get scare so easily, but there's always something to be afraid of. Hollywood has to stop doing remakes and start looking for new and better ideas. Half-naked people having a party to be cut in pieces latter is not so scary to me. I'm 25 and I prefer to watch some good old horror movies.
Reply:Not necessarily a horror flick, but check out the movie 1408 with John Cusack... I didn't have very high expectations going in since it was rated PG-13, but this was one of the scariest thrillers I have seen in a long time. It literally freaked me out!
Reply:yes horror flims have gotten worse until last week when i saw HALLOWEEN[2007] WHICH WAS THE SCARIEST MOVIE I HAVE EVER SEEN IN MY LIFE!!!
